Bebê à prova de câncer?
O título não é idéia minha, mas sim da BBC Brasil. Aliás, uma péssima idéia. Mas sensacionalismo vende jornal, fazer o quê… (por isso copio a idéia, mas fica aqui a crítica no melhor estilo “faça o que eu digo e não o que eu faço”).
O que os médicos britânicos fizeram foi usar uma técnica já muito utilizada, o Diagnóstico Genético Préimplantacional, do inglês “Pre-implantation genetic Diagnosis” – PGD, e não como foi erroneamente traduzido na reportagem da BBC Brasil: Diagnose com Pré-implantação Genética (alguém avise a eles que, em biologia, mudar a ordem dos fatores altera o produto sim, afinal, o que viria a ser uma preimplantação genética?).
A técnica consiste em retirar uma célula do embrião de oito células e identificar nela se um gene específico está presente. Sem prejuízo ao embrião, que será implantado na mãe posteriormente. Isto é uma seleção, afinal a fertilização é feita in vitro no laboratório e são gerados alguns embriões. O que se faz é verificar se há ou não o gene de interesse e implantar apenas o embrião com a característica desejada. Neste caso, de quatro embriões, selecionaram um que não tinha a cópia cancerígena do tal gene. CONTINUE LENDO…
O bebê é mesmo à prova de câncer?
Não. Ele é à prova de alguns tipos de câncer de mama e de ovário que são os ligados a este gene, o BRCA-1. Este gene e um dos mais bem estudados por ter esta forte e clara tendência hereditária. Na família do pai deste bebê, o câncer de mama é muito importante, tendo afetado a avó, mãe, irmã e prima, todas em idade nova.
A chance de esta criança desenvolver este tipo de câncer seria de 80%. Muito maior que a média da população. Agora sua chance de adquirir um câncer qualquer continua a mesma da média das pessoas.
Deixo aqui minha crítica à reportagem da BBC Brasil, que foi copiada por muitos outros jornais como o Estadão e afins. Muito resumida e simplista, com aquele erro crasso de tradução do nome da técnica e o título sensacionalista. Coisas que não se pode perdoar já que a reportagem original, da BBC internacional, está muito bem escrita.

Mas mesmo assim, é uma técnica que já é básica com geneticistas, principalmente em fertilizações in vitro, só que agora direcionada pra cancêr, por isso que causa esse alarde todo. ¬¬

Concordo com a Carol tb! A ciência está ai para nos ajudar. Utilizar estes recursos para eliminar certas doenças eu acho válido!
