Ladrão de laptop é preso depois que o dono o sacaneia remotamente
Jo Alston, repórter da Newsweek, teve seu laptop roubado quando estava no chuveiro. Parece o início de um filme pornô, mas é um prólogo de um filme de detetives. Ciberdetetives que sacaneiam com os suspeitos antes de entregá-los para a polícia.
Alston estava tomando banho quando ouviu um barulho forte. Após sair do banheiro, ele notou que todos os seus gadgets tinham sumido, incluindo seu laptop. Por sorte, ele havia instalado um programinha chamado LogMeIn, que permitia a ele de maneira segura e remota entrar no seu notebook. Ele esperou até que o ladrão ficasse online para começar a pegar informações que o permitiriam dar a localização do vagabundo e chamar a polícia.
Enquanto alguns ciberdetetives vêem filme pornô nos computadores das vítimas, Alston se divertiu um bocado. Ele deletou todas as músicas que o larápio gravou no sistema, continuou sacaneando tudo que o novo dono ilegal fazia e, no dia 1º de Abril, mudou a sua foto do desktop para que ele aparecesse photoshopado como um leproso.
Além de coletar as informações de IP – que ele dava a um detetive particular para descobrir a localização do indivíduo -, Joshua instalou mais programas de espionagem e segurança, como o Keylogger e o LoJack, e ligava a webcam quando o suspeito não estava à frente do computador para obter mais informações do lugar. Depois de juntar um monte de pistas e ter certeza de onde o ladrão morava, Joshua levou tudo à polícia, que no fim das contas prendeu o cara. O detetive nem ficou tão feliz:
Pra dizer a verdade, foi meio que um anticlímax quando as autoridades me devolveram o computador roubado. Ter o laptop de volta nem foi tão divertido quanto tentar reavê-lo, especialmente depois que o ladrão deletou todos os meus arquivos.
E tudo isso graças a um programa de login remoto. A moral da história: arrume um notebook à prova d’água e vá pro chuveiro com ele.
